Sciatica Treatment & Relief in Kansas City
Sciatica; that sharp, electric pain that shoots from your low back down through your buttock and leg; is one of the most disruptive conditions we treat. The good news: chiropractic care has an excellent track record for resolving sciatic pain without surgery, injections, or long-term medication.
What we treat
- Classic sciatica (pain from low back down one leg)
- Piriformis syndrome (sciatic nerve compressed by hip muscle)
- Sciatica from herniated disc
- Sciatica from spinal stenosis
- Pregnancy-related sciatica
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Weakness in the affected leg
Our approach
Sciatica treatment depends on the root cause. We diagnose first; disc, joint, or muscle; then apply targeted spinal adjustments, decompression techniques, and stretches that take pressure off the sciatic nerve. Most patients see meaningful improvement within 2-3 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How long does sciatica take to heal with chiropractic?
Mild cases often resolve in 2-3 weeks. Disc-related sciatica may take 6-8 weeks of consistent care.
Will I need surgery?
Most sciatica resolves without surgery. We refer for surgical consult only if conservative care fails or if you show specific neurological red flags.
Does insurance cover sciatica treatment?
Most major plans (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UHC, Medicare) cover chiropractic care for sciatica. We verify your benefits before your first visit.
What actually causes sciatica?
The sciatic nerve runs from the lower spine through the buttock and down the leg. Anything that compresses or irritates it; a bulging disc, tight piriformis muscle, joint dysfunction, or even pregnancy; can cause sciatica. We diagnose the specific cause first, then treat that.
Can stretching alone cure sciatica?
Sometimes; but usually only when the cause is muscular (piriformis tightness). When the cause is disc or joint related, stretching alone tends to provide temporary relief at best.
What movements should I avoid with sciatica?
In acute flare-ups, avoid heavy bending and twisting at the waist, prolonged sitting, and high-impact exercise. Walking is usually fine and often helpful. We give specific dos and donts based on your case.
Is sciatica more common during pregnancy?
Yes; the growing uterus shifts the pelvis and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, especially in the second and third trimesters. Gentle, pregnancy-safe chiropractic care helps many pregnant patients manage it without medication.
