Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about chiropractic care at Form Chiropractic in Kansas City. Still have questions? Call us at (816) 673-1188 or stop in; walk-ins welcome.
What does a chiropractic adjustment do?
A chiropractic adjustment increases joint range of motion, reduces pain, relaxes the spine and surrounding muscles, loosens joint adhesions, stimulates the nervous system, and relieves chronic nerve compression. At Form Chiropractic in Kansas City, we use multiple adjustment techniques (manual, drop-table, and instrument-assisted) to match the right approach to your body.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
No. Adjustments are typically painless. Patients who are extremely tense or have significant muscle spasm may experience minor brief discomfort, but we choose techniques based on what is most effective AND most comfortable for you. If you are nervous about being adjusted, tell us; we have gentler options including drop-table and instrument-assisted techniques.
What should I expect on my first visit?
Your first visit takes about 50 minutes. We send intake forms via email before your appointment. You will meet Dr. Smith for a consultation, followed by a thorough examination (posture, range of motion, orthopedic and neurological testing). Most patients receive their first treatment during the same visit, which typically includes a gentle adjustment and sometimes soft-tissue work. You leave with a clear diagnosis and treatment plan.
How much does a chiropractor visit cost in Kansas City?
Cost depends on insurance coverage. With most plans, copays run between $20 and $50 per visit. Without insurance, our self-pay rates are competitive with other downtown Kansas City chiropractors. We verify your benefits before your first visit and tell you exactly what to expect to pay; no surprises. We do not push multi-year prepaid packages.
Do you accept my insurance?
We are in-network with most major insurance carriers including Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare (UHC), and UMR. Call us at (816) 673-1188 with your insurance information and we will verify your coverage at no charge before you book.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
No. Chiropractic care is direct-access in Missouri and most states; you can book directly without a referral from your primary care doctor. Some insurance plans require a referral for coverage; we will let you know when we verify your benefits.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Yes. Chiropractic care performed by a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. The American Medical Association, World Health Organization, and National Institutes of Health all recognize chiropractic as a safe, effective treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. We screen every patient for contraindications and use the safest technique for your specific case.
How soon will I feel better?
Most patients notice at least partial relief after their first visit. Acute conditions (muscle strains, recent injuries) often resolve within 2 to 4 weeks. Chronic conditions or disc issues typically take 6 to 12 weeks of consistent care. Dr. Smith provides an honest estimate after your examination, not a boilerplate "three times a week for three months" package.
How long do chiropractor appointments last at Form Chiropractic?
Plan on 30 to 45 minutes for a standard follow-up visit. Your first visit is 50 minutes to accommodate examination and consultation. Specialized treatments like cupping or soft tissue therapy may add 15 to 20 minutes.
How long will I need treatment overall?
Treatment length depends on your condition. There are three phases: Corrective Care (relief of major symptoms, usually 4 to 8 visits), Rehabilitative Care (correcting the underlying dysfunction, usually 8 to 16 visits), and Preventative Care (optional ongoing maintenance). We are transparent about when you have completed active treatment; we do not keep patients coming indefinitely without reason.
Do you accept walk-ins?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours. Scheduling an appointment guarantees you a specific time, but if your back goes out on a Tuesday morning, walk in; we will get you seen as quickly as possible.
Where are you located? What are your hours?
We are at 600 Broadway Blvd, Suite 175, in downtown Kansas City, MO 64105; directly accessible from I-35, I-29, and I-70. Free parking in the building garage and surface lot. Hours: Tuesday/Thursday 9:30am to 1pm and 3 to 6pm. Wednesday 9:30am to 1pm. Friday 9am to 12pm. Saturday 9am to 1pm. Monday and Sunday closed.
Can chiropractic care help with sciatica?
Yes. Sciatica responds very well to chiropractic care. We diagnose the actual cause (disc, joint, or muscle) and apply targeted adjustments, decompression techniques, and specific stretches to reduce sciatic nerve pressure. Most sciatica patients see meaningful improvement within 2 to 4 weeks. See our dedicated page on /services/sciatica for detail.
Can chiropractic help with headaches and migraines?
For many patients, yes. Research shows that chiropractic care reduces the frequency and intensity of tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (those caused by neck dysfunction). Migraines often have multiple triggers, but cervical chiropractic care can be part of a broader management strategy. See /services/headache-relief for more.
Do you treat car accident injuries?
Yes. We see auto accident patients quickly, often the same day. Early evaluation matters both for your recovery and for any insurance or legal claim. Missouri PIP (Personal Injury Protection) typically covers post-accident chiropractic care. We work directly with Kansas City personal injury attorneys and provide the documentation they need. See /services/auto-accident for more information.
Do you treat children and pregnant women?
Yes. We offer pediatric chiropractic care for infants through teens, using gentle age-appropriate techniques. We also offer prenatal chiropractic care for all trimesters, including Webster Technique, with specialized tables and pregnancy-safe positioning. See /services/pediatric and /services/prenatal for more.
What is the difference between a chiropractor and a physical therapist?
Chiropractors focus on spinal alignment and joint function through adjustments. Physical therapists focus on strengthening and rehabilitating muscles through exercise. Many patients benefit from both. At Form Chiropractic we integrate corrective exercise into our treatment plans, but we work collaboratively with PTs for patients whose cases benefit from both approaches.
Why do I keep getting the same pain back after adjustments?
Usually because the movement pattern that caused the pain has not changed. Adjustments reset the joint, but if your desk setup, lifting mechanics, or posture continue to reproduce the original stress, the pain returns. That is why every Form Chiropractic treatment plan includes corrective exercise and postural coaching; we address the root cause, not just the symptom.
Do you offer acupuncture and massage therapy?
Yes. Licensed Acupuncturist Jenn Funk provides acupuncture, cupping, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Licensed Massage Therapist Robin Houston provides therapeutic, deep-tissue, and sports massage. Both services are often combined with chiropractic care for faster, more complete results. See /acupuncture and /services/massage-therapy for more.
Are there any side effects from a chiropractic adjustment?
Most patients have none. A small number experience mild soreness for 12 to 24 hours after their first adjustment, similar to post-workout soreness. Serious side effects from chiropractic care are extremely rare when performed by a licensed practitioner.
How does an adjustment actually work?
An adjustment is a quick, controlled force applied to a specific joint to restore its normal range of motion. The popping sound you sometimes hear is just gas releasing from the joint capsule; not bones cracking. The motion itself stimulates the nervous system and reduces local muscle guarding around the joint.
What can I do at home to enhance my treatment?
The biggest factors are sleep position, hydration, basic mobility, and the ergonomics of wherever you spend the most time (usually your desk or car). Dr. Smith gives every patient specific home guidance based on what we find; usually a few simple stretches or postural tweaks that compound the in-office work.
Can chiropractic help with desk-job pain and tech neck?
Yes. Forward-head posture from screens is one of the most common patterns we see. We adjust the affected joints, release the tight chest and neck muscles, and give postural and ergonomic guidance so the pain does not come back the moment you sit down at your desk again.
How does chiropractic address chronic pain?
Chronic pain usually has multiple sources: joint dysfunction, muscle compensation, postural patterns, and nervous-system sensitization. We address each layer over a treatment plan rather than chasing the symptom alone. Most chronic patients see meaningful relief within 6 to 12 weeks of consistent care.
Will I need X-rays before treatment?
Usually no. Our examination identifies most causes of pain without imaging. If we suspect a fracture, severe disc issue, or other red flag during the exam, we refer you out for X-ray or MRI before continuing care.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes are ideal. Athletic wear works perfectly. You will stay fully clothed for adjustments; no gowns or undressing required.
Do you treat older adults and seniors?
Absolutely. Many of our patients are 60+. We adjust technique and pressure based on age and bone density; gentle, low-force adjustments are common and very effective for seniors.
I have had back surgery before. Can I still see a chiropractor?
Often yes. We will review your surgical history during your first visit and avoid the surgical site itself. Chiropractic care can help with the compensatory pain patterns that frequently develop above or below a surgical fusion or repair.
What if chiropractic care does not help me?
We will know within 4 to 6 visits whether you are responding. If you are not, we re-evaluate or refer you to the right specialist: orthopedist, neurologist, pain management, or physical therapy. We do not keep patients in care that is not working.
