Acupuncture FAQs
How does acupuncture help with pain?
Acupuncture stimulates specific points along nerve pathways, releasing endorphins, increasing blood flow to the area, and calming muscle tension. For chronic and acute pain it works through the nervous system rather than masking the signal, which is why many patients prefer it over long-term medication.
What conditions does acupuncture treat?
Most commonly we see patients for chronic pain, migraines and tension headaches, sciatica, anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, allergies, fibromyalgia, and post-surgical recovery. The full conditions list above covers the broader scope of what acupuncture and Chinese medicine can address.
How many sessions will I need?
Most acute conditions respond in 4 to 6 sessions. Chronic conditions usually need a longer plan; Jenn gives an honest estimate after your first visit. Sessions are typically once or twice weekly during active treatment, then taper.
Does acupuncture hurt?
No. The needles are extremely thin (about the width of a cat's whisker, much smaller than a hypodermic needle). Most patients feel only a brief tap during insertion and then nothing for the rest of the session. Many fall asleep.
Can acupuncture be combined with chiropractic care?
Absolutely, and we recommend it for many conditions. Adjustments restore joint mobility while acupuncture addresses muscular and nervous-system tension. The combination produces faster, more durable relief than either alone for chronic pain, migraines, and sciatica especially.
Are there side effects from acupuncture?
Rare and minor. Some patients experience light bruising at insertion sites or feel deeply relaxed (sometimes lightheaded) after their first session. Hydrating and eating before your appointment minimizes both.
Can acupuncture help with stress and anxiety?
Yes. Acupuncture has a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system, reducing cortisol and shifting the body out of fight-or-flight. Many patients use acupuncture specifically for stress, sleep issues, and anxiety.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Some plans cover acupuncture, especially for pain conditions or post-surgical recovery. We help check your benefits before your first session. If not covered, sessions are reasonably priced for self-pay.
